MINUTES: January 3rd 2008 minutes were distributed and were approved.
TREASURER’S REPORT: February 6th 20,922.89. Frank English moved to approve, Jim Simons seconded. Approved. Lots of membership dues have been received with the invoice in the Newsletter. Also, over $300 for the Onekama sign has been received.
COMMITTEE REPORTS:
PUBLIC RELATIONS: Web Site: Chuck distributed pictures of the newly designed web page. The township will feed into this website and the village may be a link. The real issue with the website is keeping it updated. George Punches volunteered to be the person responsible for getting information to the website manager. We need to ask Dendra if she can attend our meetings.
FUND RAISER (read Minutes here) : The committee met again today and the theme will be a Patriotic theme and we will have big band music from the 40’s. The next committee meeting is scheduled for March 12th at 1:30 at the Farr Center.
MARINA COMMITTEE: Jim Simons reported that he attended the township Harbor Committee meeting. The board acknowledged that the marina needs the support of the village. It is important that the village gets the $6-7,000 grant to study the feasibility of a marina. Another issue is ongoing funding….will the marina support itself or would the village need to increase taxes? Would the community support this? The Marina committee (Frank and Dave) will try to get on the agenda to make another presentation to the village at their February 20th meeting to apprise the members of the need for their involvement and support in order to move the project forward..
CONCERTS IN THE PARK: We will have 8 concerts this year and Margaret reported that they have all been scheduled. The first concert will be on SUNDAY NIGHT, June 29, 2008. The Northport Band of 29-30 people will start the concert series off with a “BIG BAND CONCERT”. This will require some publicity for the concert and people could be encouraged to come in patriotic dress. PLA could have a “best dressed” contest, do red/white/blue decorations, sell flags, ask Lions to do concession, etc. George also noted that he needs more volunteers to “pass the hat” at the concerts. The board agreed that Margaret Punches has done an outstanding job with the concert series.
NEWSLETTER: Margaret reported that 1000 Newsletters were sent at a cost of $505. Our goal is to send out 3 to 4 Newsletters per year. The board thanked her for an outstanding publication. She will try for mid-May for the next issue. It will also contain information about the fund raiser in that mailing.
NEW BUSINESS: Margaret will look into the feasibility of having Onekama/ Portage Lake postcards printed similar to those available at the Benzonia museum. Mary Kuiper has old postcards and Platt River Press did the Benzonia cards.
Manistee High School sent a request that we support their “drug free” graduation party night. Board approved a $25 donation.
Meeting adjourned at 8:30 PM.
