A survey in what is now Onekama Township was completed in 1839. The area was included in Manistee Township at the time of Manistee County’s organization in 1855, but Onekama Township became a separate entity in 1867, eventually containing approximately 22 square miles with around 6 miles of frontage on Lake Michigan, Onekama Village, Portage Lake Historic Sites, Onekama Historic Sites, pierport Historic Sites, poem about onkama, What's in a name, Listen to the onekama song, The Story of Onekama, Michigan A survey in what is now Onekama Township was completed in 1839. The area was included in Manistee Township at the time of Manistee County’s organization in 1855, but Onekama Township became a separate entity in 1867, eventually containing approximately 22 square miles with around 6 miles of frontage on Lake Michigan. Around this time, the surveyors noted that “little can be said in favor of this township. It is almost entirely composed of high and steep hills, unfit for the purposes of cultivation. They will scarcely answer for sheep farms. The lake in this Township is supplied by springbrooks running out of the hills surrounding it.” Onekama may not have been fit for cultivation or sheep farming in the mid 1830s, but little did they know back then the potential for this "two-lake" town. Onekama Village Maps of Historic Sites the area Click for more information Portage Lake Historic Sites Onekama Village Historic Sites Pierport Historic Sites Did you know? Portage Lake and Lake Michigan were not originally connected... Portage Lake and Lake Michigan weren’t always connected by a channel – it was a man-made accident that made the channel as we know it today. How did it happen? Well, that is a story… Once the small Portage Creek drained into Portage Lake. An enterprising mill owner, Mr. Stronach, placed a dam on this creek to help his lumber mill operation. Future mill owners would periodically raise the water level on the lake and flood the property of early homesteaders along the shores. Since these homesteaders were improving their land, they weren’t very happy when lake levels were raised. Push came to shove and by 1871, a small ditch was dug to prevent the water level from being artificially raised. When the water finally let loose through the ditch, you can imagine what happened. Portage Lake dropped almost 14 ft and the small “ditch” became 500 ft. wide and 12 ft deep. What's in a name? Onekama Michigan is affectionately known as "1," because very often, tourists and newcomers alike pronounce the name of the town as such. • Glen Park | Onekama Portage Lake Association

Glen park, Onekama, MI, Mineral Springs, inpaved trails, footbridges, parking avaialble, ocserve wildlife, identify plants and birds, Historical Park, Michigan State Regiter of Historic parks. Glen Park • Location - West Side of Fourth Avenue above Main Street (M-22), Onekama • Natural resource area • 12 acres+- • None of the facilities/park areas meet accessibility guidelines for those with disabilities • Remnant landscape—including a creek, springs, and wellhouses - recalling a significant part of the area’s historical past; trails to observe flora and fauna • Accessible from paved thoroughfare Glen Park marks the site of the first bona fide resort in Manistee County. The area was developed in the 1880’s because of the mineral springs that existed. Today, the mineral springs still run, with several of them originating under wellhouses that were reconstructed in 1976. The wooded parkland was donated to Onekama Township in 1961, although it had been used by the public for many years. Unpaved trails with wooden footbridges run along and across spring-fed Glen Creek; a stairway connects the Springs and valley with unpaved trails along the wooded ridge in the upper areas of the Park and the parking lot. The Park is used by students of the Onekama School, who also have assisted in its maintenance, to observe wildlife and identify plants. Students in the Onekama Community Corps made repairs in the Park during 2000. The Township is responsible for maintaining this Park, even though it is within Village limits. Glen Park is named for the Springs and Creek that are its central features. It is a natural area that has been set aside for the preservation of significant flora and fauna, and a landscape that recalls a significant part of the Town’s historical past. The Park was listed in the Michigan State Register of Historic Sites in 2012. A Michigan State Historical Marker is at the lower entrance to the Park. Back To Onekama Park Maps
